After being diagnosed with a rare disease known as Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, Justin Bieber, the world-famous Canadian singer, has stated he is experiencing facial paralysis.

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is a shingles syndrome that arises when shingles strikes the facial nerve near one ear. It can induce hearing loss as well as facial paralysis.

Causes

Ramsay Hunt syndrome is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which also causes chickenpox and shingles.

The virus is thought to infect the facial nerve near the inner ear in persons who have this disease. The nerve becomes irritated and swells as a result of this.

Adults are the ones who are most affected. It’s only observed in children in a few situations.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include the following;

• Ear discomfort that is unbearable
• On the side with the damaged nerve, a painful rash appears on the eardrum, ear canal, earlobe, tongue, and roof of the mouth.
• On one side, you have hearing loss.
• The sensation of everything spinning is a strong one (vertigo)
• Face droop and paralysis on one side, causing difficulties shutting one eye, chewing (food falls out of the weak corner of the mouth), forming expressions, and fine motions of the face, as well as facial droop and paralysis.

Recovery Chances

If the nerve hasn’t been severely damaged, you should be fully recovered in a few weeks. You may not totally heal if the injury is more severe, even after several months.

Overall, your chances of recovery are better if you begin treatment within three days of the onset of symptoms. When treatment is initiated within this time frame, the majority of patients recover completely.

There is a lower risk of complete recovery if treatment is delayed for more than three days. Children are more likely than adults to make a full recovery.

Treatment

Steroids (such as prednisone) are commonly prescribed as strong anti-inflammatory medicines. Antiviral medications like acyclovir and valacyclovir may be prescribed.

If the pain persists despite the use of steroids, powerful medications may be required. Wear an eye patch while your face is weak to prevent harm to the cornea (corneal abrasion) and other eye damage if your eye does not close completely.

To keep their eyes from drying out, some people use a specific eye lubricant at night and artificial tears throughout the day.

If you’re experiencing dizziness, your doctor may recommend different medications.
