The teenager was in the team of the Parthenopean that settled for a 1-1 draw with Verona in Sunday’s Serie A fixture.

Returning striker Odion Ighalo remains anticipated alongside Enyimba goalkeeper John Noble – who changed into drafted in as a last-minute substitute for injured Cyprus-based star keeper Francis Uzoho.

Ighalo – who was the top scorer on the 2019 Africa Cup of nations – rescinded his choice to give up International football after a two-year hiatus, a verdict that saw him invited for the fixtures against Liberia and Cape Verde.

Incase he fails to turn up, manager Rohr will should rely upon the offerings of Ahmed Musa, Moses Simon, Osimhen, Paul Onuachu, Chidera Ejuke and Samuel Chukwueze.

In a recent interview, former Nigeria star Garba Lawal claimed that the comeback of the Saudi Arabia-based goal merchant will bring competition to the Super Eagles.

While a lot of people have been seeing the return call-up of the Super Eagles star as unnecessary, Garba however sees it as an a means of development for the young troupe of fantastic strikers boasted of by the Super Eagles.

“He has the experience, so I will say this is a fantastic development,” he said.

“Truth be told, his experience is needed because those younger players like [Kelechi] Iheanacho, and [Taiwo] Awoniyi need someone like him around them.

“They will surely learn from him. Also, Nigerians should not expect Ighalo to play every game or for 90 minutes because when you are aging, the body will not pick on time.”

The past Levski Sofia and Roda JC Kerkrade man does believe his return is a wrong step because of the dynamics in African football.

“We know we have a lot of young strikers which is very good for us as a nation but because African football is very tough, you must have that luck to keep on scoring for the national team,” he continued.

“Our strikers do well for their clubs but when it comes to Nigeria, they always find it very difficult.

“I believe the return of Ighalo will bring competition to that [attacking] department. If I was still at the Super Eagles, this will enable me to step up my game.”

EPL: It’ll be a win-win – Paul Merson tells Ronaldo club to join

Published

on

Arsenal legend, Paul Merson has backed Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo to join Premier League giants, Chelsea, this summer.

Merson believes it would be a win-win situation if Ronaldo joins Chelsea from Manchester United.

Ronaldo had already informed Man United that he wanted to leave the club if they found a suitable offer.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has been linked with Chelsea, Bayern Munich, AS Roma and Napoli in the past.

“I think he might be tempted to leave as it goes – the way it is going at the moment,” Merson wrote in his Sky column.

“We are hearing that he wants to play in the Champions League, so I think that might happen.

“I think it will be a win-win situation if he does go [to Chelsea]. I think it needs to get sorted sooner than later – the season’s like four or five weeks away.

“It’s been clear Man Utd won’t be in the Champions League for a long time. I don’t know why this wasn’t nipped in the bud early doors.

“It’s hard to drag on this long. I’d be a bit disappointed if I was a Man Utd fan.”
