The word ’shege’ is a Yoruba word that became popular in 2022 due to many unbearable difficulties Nigerians had to go through this year.
The country is so messed up to the extent that vast majority of people are now in “Japa” Mode.

Japa in 2022 went from seeking greener pasture to escaping the messed up situation of the country. No doubt, Nigerians saw shege in 2022, in fact, some saw Shege Banza and even Shege Banza Ukwu.
Today, I will be giving you a rundown of different Sheges Nigerians had to face this year 2022.
1. Fuel Scarcity
At different points in the year 2022, fuel scarcity was just coming and going for no reason. Gone are the days when there used to be news and conversations about why fuel are scarce in the country but not anymore.
One funny thing about this fuel scarcity thing is that, after the scarcity, prices will go up and Nigerians have no choice other than to buy at high price. It’s more like the oil marketers are at liberty to hoard fuel when they feel like increasing the market price.

Now, different filling stations sell at different prices. In some places fuel is 300 Naira per litre.
2. ASUU STRIKE
ASUU and Federal Government showed students shege this year. ASUU embarked on a strike that lasted for over 6months living many students at home doing nothing.
Some 200 level civil engineering students started collecting jobs and this was the result…. (Cue in picture).
At the time when ASUU was on strike, a lot of Nigerian sitting politicians and their children were graduating from schools abroad. Chai!! Nigerian students saw shege this year.
3. Flood
People living in many parts of Nigerians saw shege with flood in 2022. Many lost their valuables, homes and even lives to flood this year.
Reports had it that a dam was opened in Cameroon and just because Nigerian govt refused to build a dam, flood took over many parts of the country.
States like, Bayelsa, Benue and others suffered hugely from devastating effects of flood this year.
4. Dollar Rise
It seem like 2022 is the year Nigerian economy experienced major crash. Dollar began to rise like Asake’s music career and Naira was nose-diving like some people’s career.
If not for God and some last minute intervention in 2022, Naira would have been 1000 per dollar. Hey God!!
Worst part of the dollar rise thing is that, prices of everything went up like crazy. When things you ordinarily buy for 4k becomes 8k. That’s how bad it is.
This is some of the shege that followed Nigerians to 2023. May God help us.
5. Insecurity
Nigerians suffered a lot of insecurity during an administration that claimed to have a military undertone.
Kidnapping became a major industry in Nigeria in 2022. Kidnapping had been a thing before 2022 but it got worse that year. Kidnappers cashing out big on innocent families and those who couldn’t raise huge ransom were killed.
Lots of families saw shege in the hands of kidnappers in Nigeria in 2022. God abeg, 2023 should be different.
So Guys, that’s it on 5 major Sheges Nigerians experienced in 2022. We pray 2023 turned out to be a better year for all of us.
We urged everyone to make the right choice during election sha because voting wrong people into government will mean, “shege continues”.
