Ever since Covid-19 broke out in December 2020, there has been the emergence of different variants of the virus.
Interestingly, if you noticed closely, the names of the variants were gotten from the Greek alphabets.
Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet, followed by Beta and others.
The Omicron given to the newest variant of COVID-19 is the 15th letter of the Greek alphabet.
This makes us wonder why the World Health Organization skipped the first two letters “Nu” (the 13th letter of the Greek alphabet) and “Xi” (the 14th letter of the Greek alphabet) that come before Omicron.
Now, we will explain why World Health Organization decided to settle for Omicron instead of “Nu” or “Xi”.
1. To Avoid Confusion With The Word “New”
One of the reasons why the World Health Organization gives Covid-19 variants Greek alphabet names is because they want the names to be so easy that everyone could relate to them.
Interestingly, the 13th letter of the Greek alphabet, “Nu” has a similar sound to the English word “New”. This may pose nomenclature misrepresentation along the way.
Some people may start writing “Nu” This as “New“, this is something WHO does not want to happen.
2. To Prevent Stigmatization
I am sure we all remember that COVID-19 started in Wuhan, China. Now, the 14th letter of the Greek alphabet, “Xi” happens to correspond with the name of the current president of China, Xi Jinping.
If Omicron is named “Xi“, this will cause a great stigmatization along the line, as the Chinese people may start feeling offended that a variant of COVID-19 shares similarity with their president.
They may also start thinking that WHO deliberately did that because Covid-19 started in their country.
Now you know why WHO named the new wave of COVID-I9, Omicron.
Don’t say we did not do anything for you oo😜
